I. Love. Weekends.

Who doesn’t? For a while (like, ohmygod, 12 years) when I worked retail/food service, weekends didn’t mean anything to me. Just another day of stocking shelves, pouring espresso, filling paint cans, waiting on tables, mixing drinks, grilling sandwiches, selling blinds, or kissing fake Santa Claus decorations.

Yeah, I’m cool like that ;)

(In my defense this was on a Christmas set-up for Lowe’s and it was 4am. Weird shit happens)

Even on the days I had off, I worked my second job (as an UndercoverWear agent) on the weekends! No time for relaxation, family, friends, LIFE! Then last August I quite retail and started my first “real job” which I adore! Just recently, I quit my second job because it was just too stressful balancing it along side spending time with my fiance and daughter, enjoying life, and planning our wedding!

Now I’m an official WEEKEND WARRIOR! I work my bootay off all week, and get to totally drop all my worries at the door come Friday night. For the first few months, I just re-freakin-laxed. To. The. Max. I just figured this is what normal people do, right? Of course, this lead to me just ordering pizza and watching movies with my man. Fun, but not figure friendly. But I deserved it, dammit!

Then, after too many mornings of heartburn and guilt,  I found myself slowly joining the millions of other weekend busy bodies. Over-scheduled; gotta fit in the gym, cleaning, grocery shopping, play dates, friendships, ETC! I’m still trying to find a happy balance between the two. Just like anything else, I gotta get my priorities straight! Even though I had an awesome weight loss last week, I didn’t make it to the gym once. Maybe I should make more time during the week? Or perhaps stick with at-home routine during the week and ramp it up on the weekend?

I took my curiosity to Twitter :)  I got a TON of great answers, but thought I’d share two that spoke right to my inner debate!

Jessica’s response cracks me up! I wish I could look at work outs as “leisurely”! But maybe that’s my problem! I still see working out as a chore, not a privilege or fun activity. I know there are lots of people out there dealing with injuries or maybe lack of access to a gym and are WISHING they could work out! Makes one feel pretty lazy, huh ;) I love her attitude, and how she used to think just like I think now. Thanks for the good example, Jessica!

I like Mel’s idea (sorry Melanie, I hope you’re not offended that I’m apparently your new best friend and skipped the whole ‘cool if I call you Mel?’ thing ;) ) about utilizing weekend time to get in longer work outs. I know it seems like a simple enough idea, but remember – I’m pretty damn new at this whole “healthy lifestyle” thing. Last week I did pretty well just kickin it at home with my 30DS and resistance bands. Maybe I should try to hit cardo at the gym just twice during the week and then REALLY kill it on the weekend :) I think it’s an awesome way to start out my work week; feeling so accomplished from the weekend.

Thanks for the feedback, girls! I think the moral of the story is … it’s all about the attitude. Instead of saying “I earned my weekend to sit around and relax” I should try thinking, “wow, I did awesome this week. I can’t wait to reward myself at the gym.” Sounds totally lame to me right now … but talk to me in a few months. Maybe I’ll actually become one of those girls!!

Questions, Questions :: What’s your attitude on gym time? Do you rest on the weekends?

  • http://mypracticallife.com Marla

I used to be the same way. I fit my workouts in during the week just so I wouldn’t have to go to the gym on Saturday or Sunday. But now that’s changing. Because I’m watching the clock during the week, Saturday and Sunday I can workout at my own pace. I’m also finding that if I want to do something different, it’s going to be on the weekend. I just don’t have time during the week. It’s still slightly too cold to start working out outside here, but in a few weeks I can see myself taking my walking/running outside and dusting that bike off.

Thanks for the feedback, Marla! I figure it’s okay if it’s never “set in stone” … Maybe one week I’ll do more M-F and the next on the weekends. But I’m like you – I find myself checking the clock and thinking of everything I need to do during the week!

Let’s hope spring gets here soon :)

Sure you can call me Mel ;) I think you just have to find what works best for you. Maybe use the weekend to do something fun and fitness related, like go for a long walk/run at the park, rather than sweating it out at the gym.

    • Emily

Bringing in the “fun” is DEFINITELY something I need to work on! I’m keeping my fingers crossed that I can bust out the jogging stroller soon. Exercise and family time in one!

I actually work out seven days a week. Maybe I should throw some breaks in there but I don’t think I am overtaxing with what I do and since I don’t work, I feel like I should put in the time.

    • Emily

Seven days? You’re a warrior, Karen! Love it :) I think as long as you aren’t running yourself into the ground, keep it up! Somedays I fantasize about being an at-home mom and having time to work out. But I know I would just fill that time with family, housework, and probably a few tv shows. LOL

Congratulations on the weight loss! I don’t usually work out on the weekends. My husband and I have quite different schedules, and Saturday is the only day we really spend together. Actually, we often take long walks together, and I count that towards my weekly exercise. Then, on Sundays I work at a busy coffee shop at 6am, and I’m so exhausted when I get home (not to mention that I’ve been standing/moving all day) that I don’t exercise. My schedule is really flexible, though, because I’m a student so most of my time is spent doing homework at home, so it’s not hard to fit in workouts during the week.

    • Emily

Thank you, Lindsay! I have the same situation as you concerning my fiance and i’s schedules. I’m hoping that once the weather warms up we can do things outside together like you said! I feel like couples that take long walks together have the best communication skills. Something about it lets you really spend quality time together :)
