I woke up this morning to an amazing thunderstorm. It was finally cool enough last night to open all the windows in our apartment last night, (no central air!) and we blissfully fall asleep while the cold front moved in. When my alarm went off at 3:30 (yes, that’s really when I get up for the day!) there were enormous rolls of thunder while rain beat down for a solid two hours. We’re talking thunder that rolled for minutes at a time, and lightening that ran sideways across my window. It was magical :)

There’s just something about a good thunderstorm that calms me. I laid in bed relishing all the big booms and constant “woooooosh” of the pounding rain. Then, at about 5am, it just stopped. Everything was cleansed, everything started over, everything was calmed. The sun is starting to peek through the evening sky, and the birds are softly starting their day.

I have had lots of stormy days on this journey, and I’m sure I’ll have many MANY more. But there’s something to be said about those days. They makes you grow and re-evaluate the path you’re on. This blog has been quiet this week, and I purposefully didn’t post. I needed to weather out the storm on my own and really focus on what was on the horizon. I know this is kind of heavy on the metaphors for such an early hour, but it perfectly describes where I’m at right now. Last week I gained 10 lbs.

This week I did not.

Loss this week : -8.4 lbs

Well, Anda, you were right. As much as it pains me to say it, she was dead-on with her predictions. I upped my caloric intake to what it “should” be; around 1,800 per day, instead of the 1,200 I was striving for. I also watched my salt intake like a hawk and guzzled water like no one’s business. Most of this loss is due to water-weight from detoxing all that nasty salt from my system, but a 8.4lb loss? Yeah, I’m not complaining ;)

Here’s another thing. I didn’t exercise AT ALL this week. I mean, I ran once last weekend but that was it. Losing weight, at least for me, is 90% eating habits and 10% moving. I don’t want to become completely sedentary, but right now getting my food in check is my number one priority.

Next week goals
Eating: Keep tracking, hit as close to daily max as possible and watch carbs. (50% right now. too sluggish feeling)
Moving: Do what you can, when you can. I’m striving to just improve my daily routines : walking during lunch time, moving more at the office, dancing around at home. Let’s get back to basics before throwing in regimented schedules.
Feeling: Get organized! This will help me tremendously over the next few months. I get married in 4 months and we’re moving into our first home in 1 month. Who’s bright idea was that? ;) At any rate, the more prepared and organized I am, the less stressed I will be. Less stress = less opportunity to binge.

Happy Friday, friends! See you Monday morning!

Congrats on an awesome loss. I’m so glad to hear that the advice worked, I’ve been giving a friend the same suggestion and he just won’t listen. Please do tell me Anda managed to convince you it was the truth.

And, uhm, why would anyone wake up that early? If I’m up by five I feel like a crazy person.

    • Emily

Thanks, Michelle! Yes, she definitely convinced me that eating more actually is the key :)

Unfortunately my fiance works 4am – 8:30am, so the morning time is when I have to get stuff done around the house and prep food, etc before baby gets up! It’s not too bad now that I’m getting in bed by 8pm. I’m definitely NOT a morning person though, so it’s been an adjustment!!

Awesome job on the loss! It’s always more about what we’re putting into our bodies than how much we’re working out (although working out helps, it’s minor when compared to our intake). Flushing my system with low salt (because I’m a salt freak) and drinking lots of water is always the surest way for me to see a loss.

Also, just FYI, I’m a big fan of thunderstorms too. :)

    • Emily

I’m just starting to realize the whole food/working out thing. You’re right – putting IN is much more important.

Here’s the problem with salt.. it just makes EVERYTHING taste BETTER. ;)

You baller, you! You’re freaking awesome. That is all.

    • Emily

      ;) thanks

  • Erin

We wake up early too. Being awake at 4am allows us to exercise outdoors while its still cool outside…Arizona gets so hot in the summer! Great news on the weight loss. I am going to follow your example of counting calories and watching what I eat more…I am in one of those awful weight loss plateaus.

    • Emily

I’m glad I have another early-bird friend! I have to get up that early to get things done before baby wakes up. Adam works from 4am-8:30, so it’s just me in the morning!

I definitely recommend using Loseit.com for calorie counting. It’s a insanely easy interface, and has a great iPhone app. (Droid coming soon – yay for me!) Spark People is a good one too, although their site is very busy with ads and information. I like mine simple!

You can break though it Erin, you’re doing SO GREAT! 15lbs is amazing

Great job on the weight loss! I think I need to start counting calories more.. maybe that will jump start my weight loss, as well!

    • Emily

Thank you, Wendy! Sometimes counting calories can get a bad rap (people can get obsessive about the numbers) but to me, it’s a great way to benchmark what exactly I’m doing to my body. Like I said above to Erin, I definitely recommend using Loseit.com. It’s very easy to understand! :)

That’s a great loss! I’m glad that upping your calories is working for you…seems backwards but not such a bad thing I guess, huh? I’m always happy to eat just a little bit more, haha!

    • Emily

I know, right? It seems SO backwards. After talking to a few people about it … it seemed like a common problem. I’ll always take an excuse to eat more, LOL ;)

  • http://www.fitshed.com Chris

Congratulations on the loss! I’m one of those people who finds it easier to exercise a lot and eat whatever I want but I’ve consistently found that the nutrition side of the equation is so much more important! Yours is a great example of how that’s true.

Also, You’re a poet. I love your description of the storm!

    • Emily

Thanks for stopping by, Chris! I glad you feel the same way about putting nutrition first. You can always undo a good work out with food. You can’t undo good nutrition.

:) Hope you stop by again soon!

I’m actually a fairly frequent visitor, just an infrequent commenter. I love your attitude and general outlook. I find it very helpful to know that others are in the same place and we’re all working at this thing together.

I’ll speak up more in the future!!

        • Emily

Definitely do – I love comments, good and bad! I think most readers are that way. Lurkers unite ;)

Awesome loss… No idea why I haven’t been following this blog. Totally adding this badboy to my bookmarks.

Once again well done and keep it up!

    • Emily

Yeah, man, why WEREN’T you following my blog!?

;) just kidding of course! I’m happy to make it on your bookmarks! I’m headed over to your corner of the internet now. Thanks for the encouragement, it’s always nice to hear!

  • http://cupid220.blogspot.com Cupid

Brilliant! I’m trying to get some steam on my journey. I would live to hear your comments! All advice welcome!

Congrats on the weight loss this week. Also big congrats on changing your thinking about things and adjusting what you need to do for yourself.
    Also I love your blog!!

  • http://simplymadlyme.wordpress.com Tammy

Congrats on the weight loss this week! Wow! I agree that food is probably one of the most important parts of getting to a healthy weight (at least it is for me, anyway). I think exercise is important, too, but if you’re not watching your calories going in, then you can exercise all day long and not lose any weight. Great job on getting your water in, too! Sounds like you really rocked it out this week and you’ve got the numbers to prove it!! Great job!

Great job! I totally relate to getting focused.
