There used to be a time (’99 – ’05) when I wore nothing but black. Preferably black band/concert tees cut for a man. Because let’s face it, those baby-doll tees of yesteryear do not flatter anyone … maybe actual infants. Okay, maybe I wore more than just black, but you better believe I didn’t venture near anything that made me stand out.

Especially in High School, when the popular opinion is that Fat = U-G-L-Y (you ain’t got no alibi!), I was mostly focused on hiding. Will this tee hide my rolls? My boobs? My thunder-thighs? Up until mid-college, I never wore a dress outside of prom.

One of my major problems was that, growing up, I didn’t have a female role model to push a little fashion sense my way. Gina would take me to Lane Bryant or Penny’s. Now, I’m sure lots of folks find decent clothes at Lane Bryant. I did not. I admit they’ve gotten a lot more fashion-forward over the past few years, but my 12-20 year old self was horrified. It was all blazers and tent-like tees. Even worse, tent-like tees that were BRIGHT purple. Nothing like pinning a “LOOK AT ME” sign onto a parachute. No. Thanks.

When I first started blogging here at FF/E (Good acronym for this site? lame?) I found Skinny Emmie’s blog. I was blown away that someone could have so much AMAZING style (seriously, friend. props!) and show confidence in their appearance and be overweight. Mind = blown. (To be very very clear: I think overweight/fat/obese people, and particularly Emmie, are insanely beautiful. The reflection I had was purely because I didn’t believe those things about myself.)

Kind of sad, isn’t it? That I went through the majority of my life feeling ashamed. When Emmie launched her Emmie Loves blog, all about fashion and feeling fearlessly beautiful (my words, ha) I started to feel inspired to implement that confidence in my own life.

In other words, If I’m preaching that we should all love our bodies … I should probably start right here at home. Enter the “Emily sucks up her fear and takes some chances” project. ;)

That’s right. I started showin’ some leg around the office! (Excuse my poor posing/lighting, I’m new at this.) I have never been comfortable showing my legs. For that matter, I don’t like showing my upper arms, the back of my neck, or midsection. I believe baggy is always better. Putting on more form-flattering dresses and skirts felt like jumping off a bridge!!

I’m still no where close to being comfortable to wear shorts or a tank top in public, but c’mon. We all have to start somewhere, right? :)

I’ve also been experimenting with more colors and fun styles.

You. Guys. Seriously. One year ago you couldn’t have paid me to wear stripes. It’s definitely not a comfortable zone for me. After years of trying to blend in, all these outfits seem like I’m holding a NEON sign everywhere I go. LOOK AT ME!!

I have a long ways to go on this whole confidence-front. While writing this post I had to stop several times and purposefully dismiss negative thoughts screaming through my head. Why do you think you deserve attention? You are still so so fat! Now everyone will notice how out of shape you are! That is an exhausting way to live,  and I simply refuse to knowledge that voice anymore. It’s not easy being fearless, but I’m one step closer every time I challenge myself like this.

The love starts here. Expect more body lovin’, from yours truly. I hope it can inspire some of you, too!

You look adorable! I used to think that wearing the “latest” fashion trends wasn’t for me because I was overweight – I hate the word fat – so i stuck to jeans and baggie shirts. Now I don’t care! Now I go all out. I try on new a different trends, some are hits and others OH BOY.. total miss but at least I’m not hiding behind the “I can’t/shouldn’t wear that”. You keep on wearing new things and showing off what you got! :-) That’s what being confident is about!!

YES! Confidence is what it’s all about. I love your fearless attitude, girl! I’m excited to make some fashion mistakes of my own ;)

The stripes are my fave outfit!! you look GREAT!! I’m so proud of you for sharing this and working towards loving your body because you definitely should!! Keep it up girl!

    • http://www.FitandFreeEmily.com Emily

Thank you so much! The stripes kind of terrify me, and I’ve only worn it once, but it’s growing on me. :)

You look fantastic! I, too, am starting to embrace showing off my legs. I just bought two dresses at TJ Maxx that hit above the knee *gasp*!

Fat = U-G-L-Y (you ain’t got no alibi!),
Okay, twenty thousand bonus points for that reference.

OMG, your outfit pictures ROCK! You know how crazy I went over that dress from the other day. And I love all the other stuff too. Girl rocks a mean cardi.

It also took me a long time to learn to embrace plus-size fashion and stop just wearing T-shirts (you know, “till I got thin”). It’s amazing how good it can make you feel!

    • http://www.FitandFreeEmily.com Emily

I thought you might like that part ;)

You are definitely an in-real-life inspiration for me. We’re basically going to be the most fabulously dressed ladies of all time. basically.

Awww. ♥ Sounds like a plan to me! By the way, I got a pretty fab maxi dress recently but have been too shy to wear it to work. Now I kinda think I should.

Kudos to you for working on overcoming fears and trying to play a new song on your mental MP3 player. (I really love the blue floral a-line dress with the cute cardigan the best, by the way). You are a stronger woman than I…even though I have been blogging about my fitness journey since January, I haven’t shared a picture that is more than just a nice tight head shot! I’ll get there, though!

    • http://www.FitandFreeEmily.com Emily

“play a new song on your mental MP3 player.”
WOW, let me tell you how much I love that!!! Genius. I’ve never thought of it that way, but it’s completely accurate. It’s amazing what we let ourselves listen to, right?

To put my “bravery” in perspective … I think it took me an entire year to post a body shot on this blog. LOL. You’re doing great!!

You are one of the most beautiful people I know, inside and out. Love you!!

    • http://www.FitandFreeEmily.com Emily

Giant internet-hugs back in your direction!! :D (and thank you for those sweet words, friend!)

  • thechimes

You are SO freaking adorable. I’m glad you quit wearing black all the time because that does NOT fit your personality.

  • Kelsey Kelly

Cutie! I wish I dressed that cute, you are stinking adorable! Makes me want to dress up more!

  • Holly

I love all the outfits! The stripey one and the dress with the cardi are my favorites. I’m totally in this spot myself, I tend to want to hide in my clothes and I’ve realized that it does me no favors appearance wise and makes me look frumpy. I wore a dress with spaghetti straps the other day! I’ll admit, I felt a little naked, but dammit, it’s hot. I’m sick of suffering inside denim in the summer heat. Also, maxi dresses are your friend. I LOVE them. I have 3 now and they have become my summer staple in and out of the office. Shorts are the devil. :P Keep being cute, cute thang!
