Welcome back to Improving Your Spaces Week! I feel like I’m on a HGTV show. Which reminds me – anyone remember Trading Spaces? Is that still on? Why was I so in love with Ty Pennington in 2002?
Moving right along… I wanted to tackle two spaces this week: home and work. As you can tell from the photo above, I’ve completed my home gym space!!
Let’s review what my goals were:
- Create a place for all workout accessories: headbands, towels, and gadgets. Keep them here every time for easy access.
- Night before - mix up Spark and place workout clothes on my bathroom counter. That way I can get up, splash water on face, drink my Spark (energy/amino supplement) and change before my body objects. ;)
DONE on both of the above! I reorganized my bathroom drawers a bit. Now, all my tech gadgets (Fitbit, Body Media Fit, Polar HRM, Active Link – - – dude, I know. Gadget geek.) are all in a container right next to my BAMR headbands, deodorant, and hand towels. I set out my clothes the night before, right above that draw and BOOM! Insta-success. I also set out my vitamins, and prepped my Spark drink the night before. When 4am came a-knockin’ this morning, I had very little excuse. Everything was ready… despite my polar dying. Whomp whomp.
the gym makeover
- Create a home-gym space, NOT in the living room: my living room is too small and cozy. I’ve started to set up a space in my garage (free treadmill and a TV i haven’t hooked up yet), so now is the time to finish it! I need to hang a tapestry, hang my vision board and weight loss chart, find a DVD player for the TV and just make it a pretty space. Well, as pretty as the corner of the garage can get. :)
I have a big love/hate relationship with working out at home. Love: it’s cheap, it has 24/7 availability, I can wear whatever, I can act a fool without caring that other people are looking at me, and I don’t have to travel. Hate: limited space, surface/flooring issues (working out on carpet SUCKS), and having it in the same place where I can easily just plop on the couch? Not good.
So, I made the execuative decisions a few months back to make a mini gym space in my garage. I spent most of the afternoon on Monday getting it cleaned up (or as clean as an unfinished garage can get ;) ). I’m SO happy with how it turned out!
Marvel in the before/after with me, would you??
Okay, to be perfectly fair … the before picture was from, like, a year ago. BUT, I didn’t have any other before pics. Just picture less clutter, more emptiness and cobwebs. Still, it’s come a long way, don’t ya think? It’s still your standard kinda-gross garage (we have a lot of projects planned for this space) but for now, it’s my healthy sanctuary.
The brief summation (and costs associated with the makeover)
treadmill (free from Freecycle.org!)
corner stand (actually harper’s old changing table. PS – corner changing tables are THE BEST THING EVER)
dvd Player ($10 thrift store)
room Spray ($25)
assorted resistance bands
Since I previously owned the majority of everything (it was just scattered everywhere around the house) this makeover cost me $35! A wise investment for a space that I absolutely love. I’ve used it both mornings, and let me tell you, the change is significant. Having the extra room and stability (concrete floor, obvs) is a HUGE advantage with working out. Also, I love that this space is not literally in my house. No couch in the background to flop on, no fridge within a close distance to grab an unneeded snack. Just me, my gear, and my twinkle lights. ;)
The story on my room spray. Last weekend when Brooke and Ashley came to visit, we stopped by a local perfumery to make our own scents. I had one thing in mind – a fresh and bright scent for my new home gym space. I wanted to use it as a sort of aromatherapy. Every time I walk into this room, I spray a bit. It’s a combination of Tea Thyme, Ginger Bergoamont, and Blood Orange. I’m absolutely loving how clean, crisp and energizing it smells. Exactly what I wanted! Eventually (I’m hoping) I’ll start associating the scent with how strong and happy I feel working out. Whenever I need a little pick-me-up … spray! Maybe a bit goofy, but hey – whatever works, right? ;)
My favorite part of this entire makeover is my inspiration wall.
This is my view when I’m on my treadmill, wishing for death. ;) I hung up my vision board, a sign from Fitbloggin (can you see my obsession with the word Fearless coming through?) and a newly-made (and yes, I agree, pretty crazy-looking) weight-loss chart. Every pound I lose, it’s getting crossed off and (hopefully) never seen again.
So, what do you think of my new space? :) I’m pretty smitten. It’s so nice bringing myself to a place that feels like it’s just mine. I know my fellow moms will agree – it’s easy to get wrapped up in being a mom and a wife. At the end of the day, there isn’t much time left for ourselves. I hope this might encourage some of you to carve out a little space for yourself – even if it’s just a chair/corner for reading!
Do you have a healthy home space? What’s something you could easily change up?
